A few years back some friends’ invited us to their cabin not far from Evanston Wyoming. It was a small cabin with lots of rustic charm, and a lovely wood burning fireplace. A perfect cabin for playing games, sledding, and a hot cocoa or hot toddy! Our first visit was to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and do some cross country skiing. Being at the cabin in winter time was so much fun. However, a bit like indoor camping as there is no running water, and we had to use an outhouse. Actually it made the experience that much more fun. It’s amazing how efficient and quick you can pee when the temperature is in the teens, and it feels like you are sitting on an ice cube! It’s those fun and silly moments that seem to make the best memories.
After visiting our friends’ cabin I thought how lovely it would be to make a quilt for their family that represented their love of the outdoors. I wanted their quilt to have a modern spin yet, include fabrics that had natural qualities, and represented what their cabin felt like, cozy, rustic, and fun! Using browns, taupes, and blues alongside black and grey fabrics provided a color scheme straight from nature, and exactly what I was looking for. One of the fabrics I chose featured bees, bugs, and beetles, a perfect selection for a nature inspired quilt!
By the Bundle is a must buy if you like working with fat quarters, and this is where I found the pattern for the HI quilt. By the Bundle features 12 quilts of varying degree of difficulty, great for beginner or advanced quilters alike. As many quilters, I really enjoy working with fat quarters and this is a perfect book if you are looking for more fat quarter friendly patterns.

Cotton and Steel’s Sprinkles fabric in a caramel color was a perfect compliment to the blue, brown, and grey fabric that was used for each H block in this quilt.
I love the modern nature of this quilt. Yet, using fabrics with birds, bees, pine trees, and other natural elements seems to marry modern with rustic in such a lovely way.
One of my favorite fabrics in this quilt is the pop of gingham that provides this quilt with something a bit more linear, helping break up the frenzied nature of the birds, bees, and flowers.
If you are wondering this gingham is from Art Galleries (Lambkin Line), and is called Lambkin Wooly Umber, quite a few of the prints I chose for this quilt came from Art Galleries Lambkin line.
We’ve had such fun spending time with our friends’ at their cabin, a few fun pics of the kids enjoying the snow and fun! William after sledding, clearly it was fun and exhausting!

I was very pleased with how easy, modern, and fun this quilt turned out. I’ll be making a HI quilt for my family as well, I’ll be using these Cotton and Steel prints featured above, more to come later!
